Have some websites forgotten the meaning of barter?

We've opted for a barter only website. Some sites offer trade and sell features, which is great for people who'd like both options. However, we've been seeing more and more websites claiming to have different forms of bartering such as cash for goods. In our book this is called "selling". When has selling become a form of barter? Last time we checked, this was the meaning;

bar·ter [ barter ]
verb (past and past participle bar·tered, present participle
bar·ter·ing, 3rd person present singular bar·ters)

Definitions:

1. transitive and intransitive verb exchange goods or services: to exchange goods or services in return for other goods or services

2. intransitive verb negotiate terms of agreement: to negotiate or argue over the terms of a transaction noun

Definitions:

1. exchange of goods or services: the practice or system of exchanging goods and services

2. things bartered: goods or services that are exchanged

How to Barter

What would you like to see on a barter site?

I am a massage therapist willing to barter my services. I post on lots of sites but I get contacted by a lot of pigs too. I like your site because only members can see my e-mail address, Less pigs that way.

I came here to barter and saw the home exchange thing. I never heard of that before. Aren't people scared of other people living in there home?

Hi Curious

Good question. Others have the same concerns that you do. Rather than worrying while on vacation, if you have something of value then you can always tuck it away in a locked room with instructions that the room is off limits.

If this isn't sufficient, you can have relatives or friends hold on to your valuables until you return.

If you're worried about small children in your home then specify that you would like to do an exchange with adults/couples only.

Good communication is what makes a home exchange successful.

I wanted a free barter site and I know that's what you offer but I don't want to become a member, I just want to contact people and trade.

We can understand your concern Big Jim but the reason we ask that you sign up first is so you and other members have more people to trade with.

Also with your e-mail being only visible to members, you won't receive all those spam and scam e-mails. You'll only be contacted by members interested in your listing.

You may not be concerned with your e-mail being visible to everyone but some people are. Members even have the option of making their e-mail anonymous.

We don't share your e-mail with anyone and we don't send newsletters out. I hope you understand now why we do this.
