"Cash is king but barter is the next best thing" True or False?

This is a popular saying in the barter industry but it may not necessarily be true, there are different methods of bartering.

1. Non-reciprocal barter is when a person joins a barter exchange and purchases and sells their products/services with a form of barter credits. Many times prices get inflated because with a barter exchange there is a membership fee involved and a percentage taken on transactions (which is paid in cash btw)

Non-reciprocal barter can be less work and a great way to move excess inventory. So if you would have been left holding the stock, the above statement would be true. It's better to move your goods and recieve barter credits so that you may purchase other goods or services for your business.

2. Reciprocal barter does take more effort because you must find someone willing to exchange for the items or services you have to offer. When you reciprocal barter for business purposes, the advantage is that your profit is taken off of your expenses.

For example if you trade $1000 worth of goods or services and your profit is 30%, the real cost of the service or good received is $700. In this case cash is not king and the above statement is false. Looks like reciprocal barter is king and cash is the next best thing.

Everyone has different reasons for bartering.

Some people barter because they're on a budget and feel it's a great way to find what they're looking for. Not everyone barters to save money however. Some people enjoy bartering because it offers a creative alternative to selling and they may like a good story to go along with the item or service they've received. It may be how they've exchanged homes for a vacation with someone in another country or the business owner that just made a great contact.

Have some websites forgotten the meaning of barter?

We've opted for a barter only website. Some sites offer trade and sell features, which is great for people who'd like both options. However, we've been seeing more and more websites claiming to have different forms of bartering such as cash for goods. In our book this is called "selling". When has selling become a form of barter? Last time we checked, this was the meaning;

bar·ter [ barter ]
verb (past and past participle bar·tered, present participle
bar·ter·ing, 3rd person present singular bar·ters)

Definitions:

1. transitive and intransitive verb exchange goods or services: to exchange goods or services in return for other goods or services

2. intransitive verb negotiate terms of agreement: to negotiate or argue over the terms of a transaction noun

Definitions:

1. exchange of goods or services: the practice or system of exchanging goods and services

2. things bartered: goods or services that are exchanged

I've been searching google for several months to find quality sales people with no luck. Then I typed in the keyword "Barter". Within five minutes of signing up at U-Exchange I found a perfect marketer who generates multiple leads daily for my services all the way from the other side of the country. Thanks U-Exchange!

When I left the UK with my family I had a household's worth of electronics to get rid of, because of the difference in voltage in Canada. All fairly new and still covered by warranties. Unfortunately it was still deemed to be "used" equipment so I had to virtually give it away. I wish U-Exchange would have been around then!

Dear Barb

Already may have worked out a home exchange in Iceland! You're wonderful! See what wonderful things you are doing? You're helping to build a global community for us all! I read every single ad. As exciting as it is to do the trade, your site makes it possible for people to find a "real person" at the other end. A more accessible energy. Not bad for a 24 hour experience with U-Exchange.

I love this site...What a concept. I'm sure many people have things lying around the house for which they have no use. Yet someone else would love to have them, and in return they get a service or product they do need. I also think the home exchange is a great idea, this would make a holiday much more affordable for my family.
